First of all, Al lost the election. It was close, but demanding a selective recount just doesn't sound right, it wasn't right and he lost. He has since won a Nobel and an Oscar. Now he announces that our country has TEN years left. I have gotten confused concerning the timing of all this warming business. But today his sincere warning on the warming is TEN short years. Kind of brilliant if you think about it, having all those predictions of 30 years weren't nearly immediate enough so why not put the screws to us and make it ten years. Now, surely we'll have to listen. He'll teach us not to elect him.
The consensus that he claims on the Warming seems to be melting away. Every month or so an article appears like the one I am showing as a link that just cools down the whole idea of Manhattan under water.

A part of his recent statement included the brilliant and enlightened idea that our effort , as a country, should be equal to the the effort of putting a man on the moon. We should convert ,in ten years to complete renewable energy ...or perish. Interesting though, he did include Nukes in this new future and that is good by me. But,using the whole Man on the Moon iconic vision seems to lend an equality of purpose between the two efforts. I don't see it. What it does do is recall a time when science was pure and money was no object.
You know China has ordered a huge shut down of industry and traffic to achieve crystal clear air quality for the upcoming Olympics. We'll see how that works out for them soon enough but once we are in the pure state of only using renewable energy ourselves in ten short years ....what about China,India, and all the rest? They won't do anything at all...and will not have spent Trillions of Dollars ( that's with a T ) on an effort that just seems moonbeam crazy to me.
And,now in some crazy way Al Gore will be in charge even from his Political Grave.

Funny, many times I wish he would have won the election...
While I don’t particularly agree with Mr Gore on “10 years or perish”; I believe we have less than ten years to get our act together when it comes to energy and energy policy. Ten years from now we should actually be well into implementing a policy and using new energies. That’s ALL energies, solar, wind, geothermal, oceanic wave generation and nuke. As far as the bio fuels and fuel cell technology, throw those in the mix too. There is not going to be one solution. Oil won’t be going away any time soon, but if we can can import less AND use that more efficiently we could solve a lot of our problems.
Gore’s view about the “Man on the Moon” vision is fine. I’ll go one better. What about a Manhattan Project for Energy (MPFE)? And the trillions it would cost? Make it a national effort. If managed correctly, industries could develop and jobs could be created. Tie it in to an infrastructure rebuilding program (bridges, levees, inner city water, etc.) you could actually employ millions. It will be expensive. Change hurts but we don’t have much choice. We’ve spent many billions on Iraq in the name of national security. Let’s re-focus and spend it on a situation that has a bigger impact on national security.
As you stated in your last entry about the Picken's Plan, it’s about leadership. We haven’t had much in the past eight years. Or in the eight years before that. And a while before that. The illusion of leadership is more dangerous than the lack of leadership.
It won’t be easy and it’s going to hurt. We’ll manage. We always do.
