Do You Love Chocolate ? Well There is a Problem

Chocolate....I am a lover of this divinely derived stuff...any way it can be Incorporated into any food ...I love chocolate. Its a damn shame to because I am going to change my ways as of Now.

Out of the 200,000 children that work harvesting and processing this bean in west Africa it is thought that 6% are actually bought and paid for slaves. So, we eat and enjoy something because some child is in a living hell. Make that 12,000 kids ..in slavery. I am done. Go to the Hershey's site....http://www.hersheys.com/.It says right there ..."History of Happiness".

When I first started learning about fair trade chocolate I thought it was a child labor issue. It is a child labor issue which is horrible..but slavery is even worse and just to think that good old Hershey's has been selling me chocolate all these years and me not knowing that there were kids being forced to work. Just awful. Well shame on me too for not knowing .

Two of the 7 principles of being a Unitarian Universalist are right to the point in this matter; Sorry to throw in this UU ad but it does apply.

*The inherent worth and dignity of every person

*Justice, equity and compassion in human relations

There is fair trade coffee and chocolate ...thank you . My plan is to be a user of fair trade products from now on. Ben and Jerrys...doing the right thing. Starbucks also is doing the right thing...the pay double the market price for their beans to assure the small farmers make a living. We / I need to do the right thing.

Here is a site that talks about fair trade chocolate.
