I think that when Dubya was running to office he should have been honest and said what he really wanted to do. he should have said....lets invade Iraq and do a "regime Change".
Two things lead me to this conclusion.
It is very clear that the creator of the Bush administration was Dick Cheney. He was the very center of all major decisions ...who would be in the cabinet and what paperwork would reach Dubya....really strange VP type of organization.
Second is this quote from Maureen Dowd's column;
It’s evocative of an earlier effort by conservatives to prod a Democratic president to man-up, hectoring him about his “inadequate” foreign policy and his course of “weakness and drift.”
That was a 1998 letter to President Bill Clinton from the Project for the New American Century, with signers such as Kristol, Paul Wolfowitz, Donald Rumsfeld, Richard Perle and John Bolton, urging a strategy that “should aim, above all, at the removal of Saddam Hussein’s regime from power.” (Dick Cheney and Scooter Libby signed the project’s statement of principles.)
So ,very early the Bushies wanted to have a fight with Saddam. They , at one time thought it would take 90 days. It is becoming more and more clear that Bill Clinton's way of dealing with Terror wasn't perfect....but it was much easier for our country to live with than wholesale regime change. That famous line of Dubyas about swatting at flies rings in my ears.....after billions of dollars I would have rather have bought a good fly swatter.
