Now is the time to call the White House and get your place in line for a pardon. If you have a drug conviction, some sort of white collar larceny, guns infractions or my favorite....embezzlement. The list of current folks that are getting a pass on the crime they committed is no longer under Dubya than any other President for sure , but just as all the others before this President is handing out a break to good people that have made bad decisions.
My question is; Why so few and why not all the time? Behind every drug conviction there is a son or a daughter that although not perfect they really were good kids. Now Dubya did pardon an actual counterfeiter ( sort of a criminal mastermind profile) but for the most part these people did crimes that didn't involve any harm to anyone. So, how many sons and daughters remain behind bars without a pardon? How many remain behind bars for crimes that aren't even stealing ( many pardonees that committed some sort of fraud) but simply because they possessed a substance that has been banned.
Really, just what sort of circumstances meet the exact guidelines for a pardon? And, with regards to equal justice, how rich do you have to be to have representation to get your case read by a White House or Justice Department staffer? You can't pardon any of them if you don't review every case of possession or distribution that there is. Under what circumstances does one case of mortgage fraud deserve a pardon over another. Lets face it ...equal justice is a right of the Rich.
You might say that if we don't jail all of these criminals our society will disintegrate before our very eyes. I suggest that the current system of locking up these non-violent offenders is not working either. The pardoning of so few offenders is just the tip of the huge hypocritical mountain that is the War on Drugs.
