When Michael Corleone is being squeezed by Senator Pat Geary over a gaming license the very cool Michael Corleone replies, "We're both part of the same hypocrisy, Senator, but never think it applies to My Family." Thereafter, the Senator becomes a pawn for the great Michael Corleone and the mob continues on. But remember with Michael its always ...the family.
The federal government has saved Freddie and Fannie from what would have been a catastrophe in capital markets . Amazing what 100 billion in financial help will do for a needy, poorly run financial institution . Since that decision was made over the last ten days the markets here and abroad have responded very well ... because now there is hope that these two giants are safe from destruction. Now, if they had gone down, it would have been a very serious blow to an already reeling financial world. So, good that the capital markets are safe and that this downturn may eventually improve....around January I think...since the uncertainty of the election will pass by then.
It has been interesting to watch and listen to the right wing punditry concerning this matter. They always preface their remarks with some sort of disclaimer to the effect of how the place of the federal government is not to be in our business . Also what would the founding fathers say, this was not what they intended...that government needs to let the market play out....what about the idea that every man stands on his own two feet . WE are all meant to be self reliant and that applies to businesses too. Then after protecting their conservative street cred....whew it sure is good that Freddie and Fannie were saved after all. Just this once it is OK that the federal government saved the market from ultimate destruction. Well this rescue of a big business is not the first nor will it be the last.
So, the Federal government has a role in saving Capital from wreck and ruin after all. That is interesting considering that the right, and the rich and capital go hand in hand. The federal government has place in saving their financial lives ...just this once....or its for the good of everyone. Its good for investment and its good for the country.
So, when the feds are helping a single mom with a breakfast for her kids , or special teachers for kids that can't read, or just fill in the blank with a program that helps a poor person get some needed help, what is the rights' response? Not the place of government to help, too much government, can't afford it. These people should be more self-reliant. (all this is said with an air of self-assured knowledge that they have made it and will never have to worry about paying the rent or the BP bill for that matter) Maybe we need to be as concerned about families and see the for what they are; An Investment In Our Future.
The right wing is always critical of any social program. But, helping the disadvantaged in our country ....and by doing so developing their skills and talents is good for the country. Are we not in a situation that requires tremendous investment in kids and families...FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY ?
If you save these families ; with health care, with a solid education, with a future won't you save the country? Aren't families and kids the best investment we can make?
