Do we drill for more oil here in the USA? That should not be the question the question should be when do we do all of the above. We should be drilling, blowing in the wind, glowing nuclear, and using natural gas. We should do everything we can to pay for energy. But, we should pay ourselves. The current increase in oil prices are a result of macro forces way beyond that SUV parked outside your neighbor's house.
1 China 1,330,044,605
2 India 1,147,995,898
3 United States 303,824,646
The math on this energy question is really not too complicated. I'll round the numbers above a little bit to illustrate; China and India together have 2.4 Billion people. The United States is quite small by any comparison ( one eighth ). All of those people in China and India use enormous amounts of energy and their rate of increase in energy use is even greater. Cutting our demand for world market energy won't really change the world market. And, when we pay the world for our energy we are paying the wrong people. We need to pay ourselves for our energy needs. We need to do whatever we can to pay American companies for the production of energy and keep our wealth here in America. Stop sending money out of the country for oil that will only become more and more expensive. Stop relying on a flow of energy that could be cut off at the whim of someone like Hugo Chavez.
We are a country that has always done what we can to help other countries when there was a need. Either to defeat a tyrant that wanted to dominate the world or to bring relief to those suffering from natural disasters...we , the United States always responds. We need to remain strong ...economically.
