A little History ;
Back in the Seventies ,when I had just graduated from college I needed a break. Four years of going to classes and working on a degree was over and doing something that required very little thought really appealed to me. My version of a break was to drive a cab for Yellow Cab in St.Petersburg , Florida . I loved doing this ,no pressure,no boss really looking over your shoulder and tooling around St.Pete in a cab was fun to do. St.Petersburg has alot of great food places ,bars,small italian resteurants, and sub shops . So as I drove around the city I would find a place to eat ; really good food,and usually a nice friendly bunch serving up the food.
Here in Gwinnett County we have had a long wait for the Mom and Pop version of sandwich shops.For so long all that was available was corporate franchise stores that really all start to taste the same and basically have No Soul. Jen's New York Deli is a great little shop.It has been present near the corner of Five forks and Oak Road in one form or another for at least 20 years according to my memory.
What I really like is that you can go in and have a sandwich and watch ESPN for some sports highlights which is very relaxing. But,here is the thing, they have the meat and bread and tomatoes and mayonnaise and even mustard.....but they really have no clue as to what tastes good. It is simply amazing to watch.Literally a dry affair with no juicy sandwich love present at all. I really think there is a generation that doesn't get this whole customer service thing.Sort of like when I say thank you to a waitress or waiter and they reply..."no problem".
Speaking of Love. Maybe a class on just how to take care of a customer ......maybe a smile.Or when a customer is back in your deli ,almost on a regular basis,give them some acknowledgement of previously being there . That's what they are trying to do when you hear "Welcome to Moes" . But in a small deli you have a great opportunity to have a real exchange ,a real welcome. ,to a real regular customer..... but at Jen's ...nothing.
Will I go back...sure ,if only to see if I can find that elusive sandwich love of the seventies here in Lilburn ,Ga. I was much youger then...maybe its me ?

Love the blog Wes.
nice start to you blogging career. How about reviewing the Farm 255 restaraunt
Missing the 6 AM sandwich shop?
It seems that the family that ran that place had all the qualities you miss in Jen's.
Nice blog Wes. Give Arianna a run for her money...
