During the war John MCain was always against torture. He still is. He has been tortured. I guess he knows it about as well as other person in the business of leading our country. My understanding of his point is that when we torture we have no right to complain when our soldiers get tortured.
Maybe when he was being brutalized he would think about the USA and how we are better than that, that the USA wouldn't be so low as to just beat on people...or worse.
